How well do you know Atlanta?
The city of Atlanta is the largest urban area, most populous city and capital of Georgia, and is also the seat of Fulton County with a small part of the city extends eastward into DeKalb County. It is situated in the northwest part of the state at the root of the Blue Ridge Mountains, close to the Chattahoochee River. In 2015 there was an estimated population of 463,878. Atlanta is the cultural and economic center of the Atlanta metropolitan area, home to more than 5,710000 people and the ninth largest metropolitan area in the United States. Atlanta’s story starts in the 1833, first European settler who built a cabin nearby was Hardy Ivy.
First named Terminus, in 1837, it served as at the end of the Georgia railroad line (Western and Atlantic Railroad), in honor of ex-governor Lumpkin’s daughter it was renamed into Marthasville but only to be renamed again in 1845 to Atlanta.
Today it is an industrial and economic center of Atlanta metropolitan area, so important that every day a large number of commuters come here to work. Besides them, tourists visit Atlanta daily and make a huge part in the city’s economy. Currently, Alpha City – nickname for Atlanta, is the seventh most visited city in the US. Because of its great geographical position at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Atlanta has become an unavoidable trading spot. It is home to many national companies such as CNN and Cox Enterprise. The city is the significant industrial and transit hub of the southeast US, and the international airport is for sure one of the busiest in the world. Although we mentioned CNN, we can’t overlook Coca-Cola which was founded in 1892 and has its headquarters in Atlanta.
Thanks to its globalization, people often forget they are in the city of the South.
Atlanta is home to three major professional franchises: The Atlanta Hawks of the NBA, Atlanta Braves of the MLB and the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL. It is worth mentioning that Atlanta also had its own ice hockey and soccer franchises. They even had two NHL franchises, The Atlanta Flames who moved to Calgary in the 1980 and The Atlanta Thrashers who moved to Winnipeg in 2011. It is worth mentioning that a new soccer team from Atlanta is going to feature in 2017 MLS season, called The Atlanta United FC. In case you have forgotten Atlanta hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics and couple of Super bowls.
